Hassan El Geretly

Après avoir terminé ses études de théâtre et de littérature française à l’Université de Bristol au Royaume-Uni, Hassan El Gueretly a obtenu de la Sorbonne un diplôme d’études supérieures en mise en scène audiovisuelle (cinéma, vidéo, radio). 
Il travaille aussi bien dans le domaine du théâtre que du cinéma depuis les années 1970, d’abord en France, où il a travaillé comme acteur, puis assistant de mise en scène et enfin comme metteur en scène au Centre Dramatique National du Limousin et puis en Egypte. Il a fondé la compagnie itinérante Les Tréteaux de la Terre et du Vent, qui a tourné dans le centre de la France entre 1975 et 1980. En 1987 Hassan El Gueretly a fondé la compagnie indépendante El Warsha au Caire en Egypte. En 1988, il fut nommé directeur du premier théâtre expérimental au Caire. En 1992, il a démissionné pour se consacrer entièrement au théâtre indépendant. La compagnie El Warsha crée des œuvres de théâtre contemporain qu’elle propose en tournée en Égypte et à l’international. Elle tente actuellement de rendre compte de la « révolution égyptienne » en insistant sur la force et la sagesse des vaincus.

After studying theatre and French literature at the University of Bristol (U.K), Hassan El Gueretly then obtained a higher diploma in audio-visual staging (cinema, video and radio) at the Sorbonne University in Paris. He has worked in the fields of theatre and cinema since the 1970’s in France, then in Egypt. He worked as an actor and assistant director and then as director in the Centre Dramatique National du Limousin in France. He founded the touring theatre company Les Tréteaux de la Terre et du Vent that toured in France between 1975 and 1980. In 1987, Hassan El Geretly founded El Warsha theatre company in Egypt. In 1988, he was appointed director of the first experimental theatre in Cairo. He resigned in 1992 to devote himself entirely to independent theatre. El Warsha creates contemporary theatre works and it tours in Egypt and abroad. The company is currently working on narrating the « Egyptian revolution » emphasizing the strength and wisdom of the vanquished.
